Explosion at Mississippi Chemical Plant Triggers Ammonia Leak and Evacuations

CF Industries chemical plant Yazoo City

An explosion at a chemical manufacturing plant in Mississippi on Wednesday afternoon resulted in a significant anhydrous ammonia leak, leading to emergency evacuations for residents near the facility. The incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. at the CF Industries complex located on U.S. Highway 49, just north of Yazoo City. Despite the scale of the event, which local residents described as a powerful jolt, officials have confirmed that no deaths or injuries have been reported.

Emergency crews responded swiftly to an ammonia leak at the CF Industries plant, with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) coordinating the response. An evacuation order was issued for those in the immediate vicinity, specifically targeting the Renshaw Road and Generette Road areas. Officials also asked all other residents of Yazoo City to shelter in place as a precautionary measure while crews worked to contain the leak. A large plume of white vapor was visible rising from the plant following the explosion.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves confirmed that emergency officials from across the state were on the scene. In a public statement, he thanked the first responders and emergency managers for their rapid and effective response to the incident. To assist those displaced by the emergency, the American Red Cross opened a reception center in the city to provide support and temporary shelter.

CF Industries, a major producer of hydrogen and nitrogen products for agricultural and industrial use, has acknowledged the incident. The company is cooperating with local and state agencies to manage the situation and investigate the cause of the explosion. Authorities are continuing to monitor air quality in the surrounding areas, but initial reports suggested that the immediate danger to the broader Warren County area was low, according to emergency directives instructing nearby residents and businesses to evacuate.
