Manitoba is experiencing a wave of strategic investment from federal and provincial governments, aimed at bolstering key industries and accelerating the transition to a greener economy. Recent funding announcements target advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and the clean energy supply chain, promising to create hundreds of new jobs in the Winnipeg area.
A cornerstone of this initiative is a significant investment in NFI Group's subsidiary, New Flyer. The company received a combined $38 million from the federal and provincial governments to support a major expansion of its electric bus production in Winnipeg. The funding, part of a project estimated to cost between $70 and $80 million, will enable New Flyer to manufacture zero-emission buses—including battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell models—entirely in Canada. This move is expected to generate 250 jobs and establish what officials are calling a world-leading "All-Canadian Build" facility.
The investment in New Flyer is part of a broader pattern of government support for Manitoba's industrial sector. The aerospace giant StandardAero will also receive government funding to expand its Winnipeg aerospace operations by training 100 new employees and upskilling over 1,200 current staff. Additionally, plans are underway to support the green energy supply chain through Canadian Premium Sand, an Alberta-based company aiming to build a facility in Manitoba to process silica sand into glass for solar panels. The proposed government support of up to $272 million in grants and loans would cover nearly a third of startup costs for the ambitious green manufacturing project, further diversifying the province's economic base.
These coordinated investments signal a clear strategy to position Manitoba as a key player in North America's sustainable economy. By partnering with private industry to foster innovation in transportation and energy, the federal and provincial governments are not only creating immediate employment opportunities but also laying the groundwork for long-term economic resilience and environmental leadership in the region.
