Wisconsin Seeks to Block Morgan Geyser's Release After Group Home Escape

Waukesha County Courthouse Wisconsin

Wisconsin prosecutors are attempting to block the planned conditional release of Morgan Geyser, one of two women convicted in the widely publicized 2014 "Slender Man" stabbing case. The move comes after Geyser briefly escaped from a group home where she was placed as part of her transition from a state psychiatric hospital.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice filed a petition on Tuesday, November 26, 2025, arguing that Geyser poses a "substantial risk of physical harm to herself or others." The legal action followed an incident on November 24, when Geyser, now 23, left a group home in Kaukauna without authorization. She was located and taken into custody by police a few hours later in the same city.

Geyser was originally committed to a mental health facility for up to 40 years after a jury found her not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. In 2014, she and Anissa Weier, both 12 at the time, lured their friend Payton Leutner into a Waukesha park and stabbed her 19 times. The girls told investigators they committed the act to appease the fictional internet horror character known as Slender Man. Leutner survived the attack after crawling to a nearby road for help.

A Waukesha County judge had previously granted Geyser's petition for conditional release, determining that she was no longer a threat. The recent escape from the transitional group home has prompted the state to ask the court to rescind that order. A hearing on the state's petition to revoke her release has been scheduled. Anissa Weier, the other individual involved in the attack, was granted conditional release in 2021 and must adhere to strict monitoring conditions.
