Authorities Investigate Intentional Explosion at Harvard Medical School

Federal and local authorities are investigating an intentional explosion that occurred Friday night on Harvard University’s medical campus in Boston. The incident, which involved what officials described as a “small, rudimentary device,” resulted in no injuries but caused minor property damage.

The blast took place around 9:30 p.m. outside the Goldenson Building on Shattuck Street, a central part of the Longwood Medical Area. According to law enforcement sources, the device was placed in a trash receptacle. The explosion was powerful enough to shatter a glass door on the building, but no other significant structural damage was reported. The area was promptly secured by first responders.

A multi-agency response was initiated immediately following the incident. Officers from the Boston Police Department, the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD), and the Boston Fire Department arrived on the scene. The Boston Police Department’s Bomb Squad was dispatched to assess the scene and ensure it was safe, cordoning off the block to conduct their initial investigation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has joined the probe, collaborating with local and university authorities to determine the motive behind the act and identify the perpetrators. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and processing evidence from the scene. As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made, and no group had claimed responsibility. Details about the specific construction of the device have not been publicly released as the joint investigation remains active.

In a statement, a Harvard University spokesperson confirmed the incident and stated that the university’s primary concern is the safety and security of its community. The university is fully cooperating with law enforcement. While the immediate area was closed overnight for the investigation, normal campus operations were expected to continue without disruption. Authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward.
