A former congressional staffer for U.S. Representative Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) has been arrested on federal charges for allegedly faking a politically motivated attack against herself. Natalie Greene faces charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice and making a false statement to federal law enforcement after an investigation concluded she orchestrated the incident with a romantic partner.

On September 19, Greene reported to police in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, that an unknown man in a passing vehicle had shot out her car window with a BB gun. She suggested the act was tied to her work for a Republican congressman, prompting an investigation by the FBI and local authorities into a potential politically motivated crime.

However, investigators allege the incident was a hoax. According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, text messages revealed a plot between Greene and her partner to stage the event. The complaint outlines how the two discussed the plan, with her partner allegedly purchasing the BB gun used in the staged attack. The evidence suggests the motive was not political but personal, as Greene allegedly hoped the incident would create a compelling story to tell her boss. According to details from the federal complaint, she believed the feigned attack could help persuade Rep. Van Drew to assist her in getting a new car.

The alleged plot unraveled when investigators uncovered the text message exchanges. The federal affidavit states that the conspiracy aimed to generate sympathy and personal gain rather than being a genuine act of political violence. Greene was arrested and made her initial appearance in federal court in Camden, where she was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond.

In a statement, Rep. Van Drew's office expressed shock and sadness over the news. A spokesperson confirmed Greene is no longer employed by the office and stated they are fully cooperating with law enforcement. Following the charges, Rep. Van Drew's office confirmed her departure and distanced the congressman from the alleged scheme.
