A Peruvian court has sentenced former President Martín Vizcarra to 14 years in prison for corruption charges stemming from his time as a regional governor. The ruling, delivered on Tuesday, found Vizcarra guilty of passive bribery for accepting illegal payments in exchange for awarding public works contracts.

The case centered on bribes totaling 2.3 million soles (approximately $640,000) that Vizcarra received between 2011 and 2014 while serving as the governor of the southern Moquegua region. Prosecutors successfully argued that he accepted the funds from two companies, Obrainsa and ICCGSA, in exchange for securing the "Lomas de Ilo" hospital construction project and other infrastructure contracts. The court also imposed a fine and barred him from holding public office for ten years.

Vizcarra, who has consistently denied the allegations, announced on social media that he would appeal the
