Four Former New York Prison Guards Sentenced in Inmate's Beating Death

Marcy Correctional Facility New York

Four former New York correctional officers have been sentenced for their roles in the December 2023 beating death of Robert Brooks, an incarcerated Black man, at Marcy Correctional Facility. The sentences follow guilty pleas entered by the men in connection with the fatal assault, which was captured on body-worn cameras.

Christopher Walrath, a former sergeant, received the most severe sentence of 15 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. He pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. Two other former guards, Jason T. Dean and Todd G. Iadanza, were each sentenced to one and one-third to four years in prison after pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide for their involvement in the attack on the 43-year-old inmate. Their actions contributed to the violent death of the incarcerated man while he was handcuffed.

A fourth former guard, Travis W.J. Blais, received a one-year conditional discharge after pleading guilty to evidence tampering. Blais admitted to deactivating his body camera to conceal the crime as it was happening. The incident prompted a large-scale investigation led by a special prosecutor, leading to indictments against a total of 10 officers on various charges, including murder and manslaughter.

The investigation revealed that Brooks was beaten by a group of officers in a hallway at the medium-security prison near Utica. Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, who served as the special prosecutor, stated that the body camera footage was critical evidence in securing the convictions. The plea deals came after some of the guards were initially charged with second-degree murder. The case has drawn significant attention to the conduct of officers within the state's correctional system, with Walrath admitting to his direct role in the fatal assault during his plea.
