A senior at McMinnville High School, confirmed to be a U.S. citizen, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, an incident that has amplified community fears amidst a period of heightened immigration enforcement in Oregon.
The student, Francisco J. Rodriguez Martinez, was taken into custody on a Friday while on his off-campus lunch break. According to reports from several local news outlets, he was in a vehicle with his mother and brother near a 7-Eleven when they were approached by agents in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles. The McMinnville School District quickly issued a statement clarifying that the arrest did not occur on school property and that district staff were not involved, underscoring that Oregon law limits cooperation between schools and federal immigration authorities.
An attorney representing the student, Chanpone Sinlapasai, confirmed that Rodriguez Martinez is a U.S. citizen, suggesting the arrest was a case of mistaken identity. ICE was reportedly seeking a different individual with a deportation order. The student was later released from the federal agency's custody.
This event has occurred against a backdrop of growing anxiety within Oregon communities over federal immigration activities. In the nearby city of Hillsboro, residents recently packed a city council meeting to protest what they described as increasingly aggressive tactics by ICE agents. Emotional testimony from community members, including teenagers, highlighted a climate of fear, with reports of agents pulling people from cars and making arrests near schools and local businesses. These incidents have included one where armed immigration agents surrounded high schoolers in a coffee shop drive-thru.
The mistaken detention in McMinnville has drawn sharp criticism and renewed calls for accountability. The student's arrest during his lunch period serves as a prominent example for activists and families who feel that recent enforcement actions have become indiscriminate, directly impacting citizens and non-citizens alike and eroding trust between the community and law enforcement.
