A woman has been fatally shot in a quiet Indiana suburb after the cleaning crew she was part of arrived at the wrong address for a job. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Whitestown, a town in Boone County, when the homeowner mistook the workers for intruders.

According to the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department, the homeowner was awakened by a security alert and saw individuals on his front porch attempting to enter his residence. Believing his family was in danger from a home invasion, he fired his weapon from inside the house, striking one person. The homeowner then called 911 to report the situation. When officers arrived, they found a woman, later identified as Maria Florinda Rios Perez, who had been shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations quickly revealed that the group on the porch was a cleaning service that had been dispatched to the wrong address. Police described the event as a tragic and unfortunate mistake. The ongoing police investigation has confirmed that the homeowner is fully cooperating with authorities. As of the initial reports, no charges have been filed against him.

Friends and family of the victim have identified her as a 32-year-old mother of four who had moved to the U.S. from Guatemala. Reports shed light on the victim's life and the devastating impact on her family. The cleaning company has not yet issued a public statement regarding the dispatch error. Police Chief Jake Rehard of the Whitestown PD referred to the incident as “a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” underscoring the tragic nature of the fatal mix-up. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led the cleaning crew to the incorrect location.
