Human rights organizations and official government bodies have released multiple reports detailing allegations of systemic abuse, torture, and a significant number of deaths among Palestinians held in Israeli prisons and detention centers, particularly following the events of October 7, 2023. The surge in detentions has brought increased scrutiny to what critics describe as a long-standing and deliberate policy of mistreatment.
Since the start of military operations, Israel has arrested thousands of Palestinians from both the West Bank and Gaza. Detainees and rights groups have reported harrowing accounts of physical, psychological, and sexual violence, as well as severe medical neglect and inhumane living conditions. According to investigations by organizations like Amnesty International and +972 Magazine, these practices are not isolated incidents but part of a broader, institutionalized approach. The U.S. State Department has also documented significant human rights issues in its annual country reports, including credible reports of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment of detainees.
A central point of contention is the use of legal frameworks like the controversial Unlawful Combatants Law, which was amended after October 7 to broaden the state's power to detain individuals from Gaza indefinitely without charge or trial. Human Rights Watch has condemned this law, arguing it strips detainees of fundamental protections guaranteed under international law and amounts to arbitrary detention. These measures, combined with the widespread use of administrative detention, have left thousands of Palestinians in a state of legal limbo.
The scale of incarceration has been documented as a central pillar of the occupation for decades, with one data-driven report stating that over one million Palestinians have been arrested since 1967. The recent spike in deaths in custody—with dozens of documented cases since October 2023—has intensified calls for independent investigations. These concerns are echoed in findings from official human rights assessments, which validate claims of a severe humanitarian and human rights crisis within Israel's carceral system. International bodies continue to press for accountability and adherence to international humanitarian law.
