Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was hospitalized on Wednesday after a fall near his home in Braddock. The first-term Democrat is in stable condition and being kept overnight for observation as a precautionary measure.
According to his communications director, Carrie Santarsiero, the incident occurred Wednesday morning as Fetterman was getting into his car. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation, where he was treated for a bruised shoulder. In a statement, his office confirmed he was "in good spirits and talking with his family and staff." Importantly, initial medical tests have shown no evidence of a new stroke or seizure, a key concern given his past health issues.
This event brings renewed attention to the senator's physical well-being. Fetterman, 56, suffered a life-threatening stroke in May 2022 during his successful campaign for the U.S. Senate. The stroke left him with auditory processing difficulties, which sometimes require him to use devices to transcribe spoken words in real time. Following the intense campaign, Fetterman also sought inpatient treatment for clinical depression in early 2023, speaking openly about his mental health struggles since then.
The senator's ongoing recovery and adjustment to public life have been closely watched. His office has maintained transparency regarding his health, a practice continued with the prompt announcement of his fall. While this hospitalization is for a minor injury, he remains under medical supervision to ensure a full recovery. No further details on his expected release have been provided.
