Suspect in DC National Guard Shooting Faces Murder Charge After Soldier's Death

National Guard members on patrol in Washington D.C.

The man accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., is now facing a first-degree murder charge after one of the soldiers succumbed to his injuries. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the upgraded charge against 27-year-old Mohmed Ismail Ali, who was already in custody for the attack.

The incident occurred on a Tuesday evening when two soldiers, part of a standard security patrol, were shot at a traffic stop near the White House complex. Both were rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that one of the soldiers, whose name has not been publicly released pending family notification, died from his injuries days later. The second soldier remains in critical condition. Federal prosecutors have now elevated the charges to reflect the soldier's death, adding first-degree premeditated murder to a list that already included assault with intent to kill.

Following the shooting, a multi-agency investigation was launched involving the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the FBI. Investigators are probing the motive behind the attack, with law enforcement sources indicating they are actively exploring whether it was an act of terrorism. According to an FBI affidavit mentioned in court filings, Ali's online history and personal associations are being scrutinized for potential links to extremist ideologies. The investigation seeks to determine the motive behind what authorities initially described as a possible terrorist shooting.

Ali was arrested shortly after the incident following a police pursuit. Officials have not yet commented on what specifically prompted the shooting during the traffic stop. The presence of National Guard troops has been elevated in the capital for various security reasons in recent years. The attack has drawn condemnation from city officials and military leaders, who have offered condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and pledged support for his wounded colleague. The case continues to develop as the investigation into Ali’s background and motivations progresses.
