Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has died at the age of 24, the team confirmed. His death followed a police chase in the Dallas suburb of Frisco, with authorities reporting the cause as an apparent suicide.
The incident began when police in Frisco were asked by the Racine, Wisconsin, police department to conduct a welfare check on Kneeland. According to a statement from the Frisco Police Department, officers located Kneeland’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. He allegedly evaded them, initiating a brief pursuit. Police decided to terminate the chase due to high speeds and the risk to public safety.
Shortly after the pursuit was called off, officers discovered Kneeland’s car had crashed. He was found deceased a short distance from the vehicle. An investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing, but initial findings point to suicide. No other individuals were reported to be involved or injured during the incident.
The Dallas Cowboys organization released a statement expressing profound sorrow. “The Dallas Cowboys are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Marshawn Kneeland,” the team announced, remembering him as a promising young player. The tragedy occurred just days after Kneeland, a second-year player, achieved a significant career milestone. He scored his first NFL touchdown on a fumble recovery during the Cowboys' recent game, a highlight in what was considered a burgeoning career.
Kneeland was selected by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan. He had become an increasingly important part of the team's defensive rotation this season. His death has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, with teammates and fans sharing their condolences and grief on social media.
