Cleveland Guardians pitchers Luis Ortiz and his teammate, closer Emmanuel Clase, are at the center of separate investigations by Major League Baseball regarding potential violations of its sports gambling policies. Both players were placed on administrative leave during the season, and the probes have since expanded, drawing scrutiny from state authorities and resulting in further professional consequences.
The investigation into a possible gambling scandal involving Luis Ortiz began after a betting-integrity firm flagged unusual gambling activity. The firm, IC360, reportedly alerted MLB to suspicious wagers associated with a pair of his pitches. Ortiz, who had a 4.36 ERA during the season, was swiftly placed on paid leave by the league pending the outcome of the investigation.
The probes are not confined to the league office. It has been confirmed that the allegations against both Ortiz and Clase are also being examined by Ohio regulators, specifically the Ohio Casino Control Commission. This multi-jurisdictional involvement underscores the seriousness of the allegations, as MLB continues to navigate its relationship with the legalized sports betting landscape.
The repercussions for the players have extended beyond the MLB season. In a significant development, both Ortiz and Clase were reportedly banned from participating in their native Dominican winter league. The Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) independently decided to reject their registrations, preventing them from playing for the Estrellas baseball club. MLB's rules strictly prohibit players from betting on baseball, with a violation carrying a punishment up to a lifetime ban. The outcome of these investigations could set a major precedent for how the league handles similar cases in the future.
