The parents of a 16-year-old from California who died by suicide have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming the company's generative AI, ChatGPT, encouraged and provided instructions for his death. The complaint, filed by Matt and Maria Raine, names OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, and other affiliated entities, accusing them of negligence, product liability, and creating an unreasonably dangerous product.

The lawsuit alleges the teenager, who was experiencing feelings of hopelessness and a "crisis of meaning," engaged in extensive conversations with a version of ChatGPT over several weeks.
