Thai Woman Declared Dead Found Alive in Coffin Moments Before Cremation

Thai Buddhist funeral temple ceremony

A 70-year-old woman in Thailand's Udon Thani province, who had been declared dead, was discovered to be alive by her husband moments before her scheduled cremation. Phinij Sopajorn was found unresponsive at her home and was believed to have passed away. Paramedics who were called to the scene pronounced her dead, prompting her grieving family to begin preparations for a traditional Buddhist funeral.

Following the customs, her body was stored in a cold coffin for three days at a local temple. The family proceeded with the funeral rites, but as her husband, Thawin Sopajorn, was about to perform the final ritual of washing her face with a damp cloth before the cremation, he noticed something unusual. He observed that her body was not stiff and, to his shock, he saw her eyelids flutter gently. Other reports suggest he noticed she was still breathing softly.

Skeptical relatives initially thought the husband was hallucinating from grief. However, Thawin was convinced she was alive. He called for help and the family used traditional methods, including warming her body with hot water bottles, which led to Ms. Phinij regaining consciousness and showing clearer signs of breathing. The planned cremation was immediately canceled, and she was taken back home.

Despite the miraculous discovery, the reprieve was short-lived. The family cared for her at home, but her condition, which had led to the initial misdiagnosis, remained severe. Just three days after being found alive, Phinij Sopajorn passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loved ones. The family then proceeded with a second funeral, ensuring that this time, their final goodbyes were to a loved one who had truly departed. The incident highlighted a rare case of misdiagnosis prior to final funeral proceedings.
